Today I have been feeling a-bit better after having a stinking cold all Christmas. I managed to have a very full on and productive day in the studio.
I started out with the idea of wanting to illustrate some form of sea creature after watching the waves on Christmas day and feeling very calm and happy while watching the sea.
I ended up choosing an octopus as I love the way they move through their spaces. I started out by doing some research, looking into the way they move, colours, the way the tentacles curl around things etc. From there I picked a few image references and began drawing. I wanted to show the movement of the octopus somehow through the illustration, and I though I could this with the way in which the tentecles are positioned and curling.
I have used blue and indigo watercolour as a base start to the piece, I then added on lines with fine liners (0.3 & 0.5) and then moved on to the final stage which was stippling to add extra shading to the piece using a 0.2 fine liner.
I am happy with the result, although I see much more room for improvement especially with my line work.
I am now thinking about starting a project based on sea life, so watch this space!
